“Thank you everyone for being able to attend this.”

- Then, lets get straight to the topic. Firstly, describe how you felt about the work after reading the sсript, and what is the charm of the character Cha Bong Gun.

“Okay. The first time I read the sсript, I felt that the character (Cha Bong Gun) was really an innocent person. Even though it was tough, even though he faced dead-ends, he always overcame these obstacles; he would work hard with all his life, and through his efforts and belief in himself, he grew and matured. I really wanted to play this character because I felt that there was a lot of similarities in our stands.”

- This is a character who faced many different kinds of problems, for example, the disbanding of the soccer team et cetera; do you have any tough past experiences which you can joke about now?

“Experiences as YunHo? Then it should be the times before my debut, when I was still a trainee. I am only where I am today because I kept working hard while maintaining the thought of ‘When will I be able to debut on stage to sing’. It was the toughest during that period. Furthermore, I lived far away, and it took 4 hours just to travel to and fro, so that was also pretty tough. At that time, I had nothing except for belief in myself, and I got to where I am now based on my passion. In that case, I’m not that much different from Cha Bong Gun.”

- Was there anything you did to create the character, or say immerse yourself in the character that you were playing?

“I was once very into soccer players. The filming period was coincidentally during the a-nation activities. I would practice with the ball backstage, and would also practice the way I walked. All these were done according to the style of Bong Gun.”

- Other than this, impromptu singing and dancing with costumes, you have been through many of such elaborate settings, so how did you feel towards acting?

“Through playing Bong Gun’s character, I learnt a lot of new experiences. For example in the scene where I donned on a chicken costume for my job, that is something I don’t usually do. To me, these new experiences are all very precious. To be able to reflect as another person is not just work to me, but it’s closely related to my own life and my growth [as a person].”

MY GOAL IS TO IMPROVE MY STANDARDS IN EVERY OTHER ASPECT, THAT IS THE YUNHO I WANT TO BE.

- We heard there was a huge number of fans who entered the filming scene, and there were a lot of people who acted as the masses.

“Yes, I was very happy. The fans gave me a lot of strength. Also, the staff told me, ‘you really have very good fans’.”

- It is probably very pressurizing debuting in your first drama series; share with us your feelings about being an actor.

“There is definitely some differences between an artiste and an actor. While you work as an actor, there will be many staff on the set whom you are meeting for the first time, so I would want to interact with them as I finish filming episode 1 to episode 16 smoothly. Moreover, this is the first time I am taking the main lead, and although I had gradually developed some acting skills through being in variety programmes in the past, the atmosphere [on the set] is completely different. It was very pressurizing in the beginning. But I thought to myself, if I work hard, then I will be able to express my intentions to everyone. Thus I completed the filming by working very hard, by being very focused, and by enjoying it thoroughly.

An artiste would need to express a lot of things in about three minutes (of the duration of a song). I think an actor needs to do the complete opposite. An actor needs to maintain a rhythm like that of breathing, and through the entire process from the beginning till the end, express happiness and pain. This is what is different from being an artiste.”

- In the process of acting, in which areas do you think you have matured in?

“This time it was the very innocent and pure Bong Gun, who slowly matured through the process of meeting many people. Like I have mentioned before, this part grew along with me as a person and in my own life. I have also experienced many things I have never been through before. The filming might have ended, but Bong Gun still exists in my heart, and if the character of Bong Gun can continue to stay in everyone’s mind as time passes, I would be happy. I also want to work hard to try out other works, something that is a complete 100% change from Bong Gun, and challenge different types of characters.”

- In the future, as both an actor and singer, which will be your focus? Do you have any plans which you intend to carry out?

“Frankly speaking, I have been a singer for 5, 6 years now, and to say ‘I prefer acting’ would be a lie. However, this time I experienced a charm that is different from being an artiste, and I would like to work hard on it properly. Of course not just in being an actor alone, but I would also want to improve my standards in every other aspect, and that is the YunHo I want to be.”

- Although there were many highlights in this drama, do still list out some scenes which one must look out for.

“I would still recommend everyone to focus on the scene where we played soccer. In that scene I did not rely on any stand-ins; basically I did everything myself. I would somewhat like to try out something realistic. That was probably the impression I had. It was a scene where I had to perform a high-level skill, and I repeated the scene till I was able to do it properly.”

- There was also a scene in the drama where you performed “Checkmate”.

“It was probably very shocking, right? (laughs)”

- Was this part included in the sсript initially?

“No, it was not there initially. However, when the director saw the way I danced, he suddenly said to me, ‘That, it’s not bad to do that too.’ (laughs)”

- How did it feel dancing to your own song as your character?

“It was quite embarrassing, to say the truth, but because it was Bong Gun and he needed to sing a new song, so I tried my best to act it out based on that feeling.”

- Performing in a television drama, participating in MJ’s Memorial Concert, you really challenged a lot of things; what other challenges do you have in mind for this year?

“If a good opportunity arises, and if I have faith in myself, I would like to try out everything. My personality is such that even if a good opportunity arises, but I personally feel that ‘it’s still not time’, then I won’t do it. Even if there is opportunity and luck, I still have to work hard myself, grab hold of the opportunity and show a different image of YunHo to everyone.”

- How do you plan to launch your activities from here on?

“I’m still not too clear now. I would probably meet everyone as a singer [still]. After all I am still a singer now (laughs).”

- Lastly, you might feel a bit embarrassed to say this yourself, but what do you think are the charms of YunHo as a solo singer?

“For this, not just as a solo artiste, but it should be in all that I do. Maintaining my passion, working hard, challenging new things, these are probably my charms. But these, like many others, are naturally expected. Every time, every time, [I will aim for] a higher goal, challenge a different image, and continue to work hard. This part is something that I am proud of. I really want to be someone who works hard.”

100611 U-Know Yunho's New Musical 'Goong' Reveals Teaser Poster

The musical 'Goong', which is garnering great attention for casting TVXQ member U-Know Yunho for its lead role, has revealed its teaser poster.

With a unique fantasy setting of 'Korea of 2010 is a Constitutional Monarchy', the teaser poster perfectly captures the crossover concept as it shows Chae Kyung, who becomes a princess overnight, wearing an elaborate wig and imperial family uniform but also holding a mobile phone and teddy bear. On this original drawing from the comic book, they added the title of 'Goong' with imperial designs which reflected their confidence of becoming Korea's best domestic musical.

Netizens have been showing a heated response to the recent announcement of the musical's cast including TVXQ's U-Know Yunho, saying things like "The sync between the characters in the book and the cast is amazing. I can't wait for the musical," and "It's definitely worth the wait. I can't think of a better person to be a prince than U-Know Yunho, with his prince-like looks, great singing and dancing skills and polite character."

They also expressed their expectations for the domestic musical by saying, "Please make this a great musical. So that it becomes the stepping stone to further diversify domestics musical contents!" and "I can't wait because this will be a domestic production, and will be different from all the other musicals that are imported from other countries. I hope that it becomes a production that will aid in the development of the Korean musical culture."

The musical will be co-produced by MaeilKyungjae Media Group (Daily Economy Media Group) and Group8, and will begin showing on September 8th at the Korean National Museum.

Yunho, who is accumulating experience as a new actor, and whose acting debut was the drama [Heading to the Ground] which he starred in, is well-mannered, candid and mature beyond his years.

"Whenever I encounter any difficulties, "Bong Goon" gives me a lot of strength."

When he appears on the camera, Yunho is like a gentle breeze in the beginning of summer, giving off the wonderfully light and sweet scent of peppermint. His actions and movements are always appropriate. No matter when or where, he is an extremely outstanding young man.

Yunho continues to maintain his body at a golden ration and his exquisite facial features give off a brilliant, warm smile. However, such a perfect him surprised everyone when he chose a wannabe soccer player - Cha Bong Goon - who is not clever, as the role that he debuts in as an actor.

"Bong Goon is someone who thinks about soccer no matter what difficulties he faces. This means that even if he has nothing left, if only to work hard to hold on tightly to the possibility that one day he will be able to stand on that dream stage - this is like a reunion with the person I was during my trainee days."

Whether it's to jump into the sea or to escape from a fire scene, the continuously exciting scenes leave the fans on the edge of their seats.

"Jumping into the sea was really terrifying. But because I'm still a newbie when it comes to acting, I felt that if I did all this on my own, as an actor, it would be an asset to me. This is why I rejected the idea of having a body double."

In giving his all in portraying the character Bong Goon, after half a year, Bong Goon has already entered Yunho's heart.

"In episode 8, that's when I first felt that 'Bong Goon' is a manly man. Although it's just a scene for a match with another team member, up until now, Bong Goon's internal strength at that moment is still deeply carved into my memories. Every time I encounter difficulties, I'll think back on that scene. As long as I think 'If it's Bong Goon, he can definitely overcome it', then I can continue to move forward zealously."

When asked about something interesting that happened during filming, Yunho said, "When I'm negotiating, I become more manly."

A TV series is usually done with a lot of discussions with the staff.

"At first, I'd just go ahead and do it, like the scene where I jumped into the sea. But gradually, I began to listen more to what the other party is saying."

When his drama aired, his family and friends were happy to see Yunho's first work as an actor.

"At the very beginning, they watched with the mentality, 'Look, it's Yunho!' but from episode 4 onwards, it suddenly became 'Look, it's Bong Goon!', so I felt really happy. (Laugh) Compared to my original character, Bong Goon makes people feel more for him. I want to challenge acting again and I want to try a sad role like someone who can't see but loves a woman deeply."

Also, the food that Yunho loves right now.

"I went to Las Vegas because of the Michael Jackson Tribute and I fell in love with Indian cuisine. There's also the beef hot pot that is popular in Korea and things like that. Instead of just listening to the opinion of others, I prefer to go and try the different cuisine myself and if I find better restaurants, I'll introduce them to my friends. I'd rather do that (laugh)."

The World Cup has caught everyone's eye, so we asked Yunho, who loves soccer, about his thoughts on that. Bong Goon is a center-forward, but what position does Yunho think is most suitable for him?

"The goalkeeper I guess. The goalkeeper is someone who protects the team and is the most leader-like."

“No matter how hard it was, Bong Gun had an attitude of absolute focus on soccer – even if he had nothing, he would continue to work hard while holding on to the dream that someday he would be up on stage, and that resounded strongly with my past when I was still a trainee. I felt that this character could help me to mature too.”

Be in jumping into the sea, or escaping from a fire, such intense, exciting scenes in a drama series are bound to cause worry and anxiety to the fans.

“It was really scary falling into the sea. But because I was still a newcomer in terms of acting, thus I felt that it would be a fortune for me as an actor if I was able to complete every scene on my own. That was why I rejected the suggestion of having a stand-in.”

After spending half a year making every effort to play out the role of Bong Gun, currently, [Bong Gun] still resides in the heart of Yunho.

“It was only in the eighth episode that I felt for the first time that, ‘Bong Gun is now a man’”. Even though it was just a scene of a competition with another soccer player, up till now, however, the determination felt by Bong Gun then is still deeply etched within my mind.
Every time I meet an obstacle, this scene would come back into my mind. As long as I think “if it was Bong Gun, he will definitely overcome it”, I would continue to walk on with a positive attitude.”

When asked if he had unusual experiences during the process of the filming, Yunho said,”I would become a bit chauvinistic when I interacted with people.”

The progression of the filming for the television drama went on simultaneously with discussion with the staff.

“Initially I would just take action, like in the scene where I jumped into the sea, but now, I have slowly learnt to listen to what the other party has to say from the beginning.”

When the television drama was on broadcast, friends and family members were all very happy to be able to watch Yunho’s debut performance.

“Initially, everyone watched it with an expectation of “Look, it’s Yunho”, but from the fourth episode onwards, it became “Look, it’s Bong Gun”, so I felt very happy then. (Laughs) Compared to my own character, Bong Gun is someone who would bring more sorrow to people. I still hope to challenge my acting skills, and I really want to try the sorrowful role [of a man] who deeply loves a woman even though his feelings are not expressed in a obvious manner.”

Just to mention also, Yunho is currently passionate about food.

“That is because while I was in Las Vegas for the Michael Jackson Memorial Concert, I was deeply obsessed with Indian cuisine. [I was also obsessed] with South Korea’s very famous offal hotspot, wings and those type of food. I prefer going around to try different types of cuisines, then introduce them to my friends if I manage to find any better stores, than listen to other people’s recommendations. That is how I am. (Laughs)”

Lets talk about the much-awaited World Cup, and the thoughts of Yunho, who personally like soccer very much. Bong Gun was a mid-fielder, but what position does Yunho think suits himself most?

“Probably the goalkeeper. The goalkeeper is someone who watches over and out for his team-mates, and that’s most like the style of a leader.”

A man who is quietly passionate…

With their outstanding vocals and dance skills, THSK has not only set new records in South Korea, Japan, but all over Asia in the field of music. As their leader, YunHo made his debut as an actor in a South Korean television drama! He plays the role of a soccer player, and due to the upcoming World Cup, he has received more attention through his character. While we did touch on the topic of acting, he also shared some personal issues, his ideal marriage and his family!

I am very happy to be able to experience a normal lifestyle through a television drama…

Being the only Asian artiste chosen to partake in Michael Jackson’s (MJ) memorial concert event, along with his volunteer work and donations towards the victims who suffered from an earthquake in Haiti et cetera, YunHo has been receiving much more attention recently. Although he is only 24 years old, there is an unexpected sense of maturity. He is usually serious, and with his elegant facial expressions, he has showed many unseen sides of himself to the audience through this television drama!


“In music, you have to think of how to show everyone your best in three minutes. As an actor, however, you need a long time of interaction; you continue to act as you understand the surrounding atmosphere. I feel very happy as this is my first time experiencing [acting], and I feel [the character] is very similar to who I am. Even though I have never done this in my own life, but I am still as happy to be able to experience it through the television drama. Do I want a vacation? No, but it would be good if I have some free time, Bong Gun and I are those types who would constantly want to do something.”

The character he is playing, Cha Bong Gun, is a soccer player who once thought of giving up on his dream, but through an unexpected opportunity, he was given the chance to turn professional. What was shocking was that in every scene where Bong Gun had to display certain spectacular soccer skills, YunHo did everything by himself, without a stand-in.

“Not just in the scenes relating to soccer, but even in those dangerous scenes, I did everything personally. The people around me tried to persuade me out of it, but I feel this is something basic I have to do as a newcomer. My acting skills have improved a bit too, following the increase of Bong Gun’s life experiences, I also matured in my attitude. Initially, Bong Gun felt that he was unlucky in life and would give up on himself, but he eventually overcame any obstacle that he met. I feel true success is made up of 10% luck, and 90% effort. I also told my friends frequently that there will always be a higher mountain that the existing one [you may be facing]. If you can’t learn to overcome this [mountain], you will never be able to climb the next one.”

YunHo took some time to think through before he answered very politely and slowly in Japanese. That gentle voice really let one feels very comfortable with him. This is a big change from Bong Gun, who is constantly very harsh in his speech.

“I am usually like how I am right now too, I don’t speak harshly. But I do speak dialect sometimes when I am with my friends.”

The manager added, “In Japan’s terms, that situation would be akin to coming from Kyushu and speaking its dialect.” Has YunHo, who speaks dialect, suddenly formed an image of a Kyushu man? When asked if he was the “male chauvinistic type”, he laughed and denied as he waved his hands.

“Even though it is not to such an extreme degree…(laughs), but a man should always be louder in actions than in words, and he should always put responsibility as top priority. No matter what happens, he should always be in the front, protecting everyone while observing the surrounding situation. When I see my father, whom I respect a lot, I would have such a strong thought. My father has always been the leader amongst his friends, and he has been friends with my mother since they were students so he’s also quite a romantic. I really feel he is very amazing, to have found both friendship and love [in my mother].”

While flipping LEE, he looked directly ahead as he said, “My ideal family is one where I would feel happy just being together.”

“I want to marry at 30 years old. Although it is not a bad idea to marry earlier, but I would want to only do so after I have achieved my goals. While I do not have time to get into a relationship now, there will come a time when I will be in one. Having been a leader for so long, my personality is quite domineering. But when the both of us are alone, frankly speaking, I hope to be led [by her]. Yet again, when there are people around, I also want to be the focus of attention…(laughs). My ideal girl would be someone who can give me suggestions and guidance. I would want to wear the exact same outfit together with my [wife and] child, then travel around to different places together as a whole family.”

Dong Bang Shin Ki leader U-Know Yunho will turn into a musical actor. Yunho has been honored to be cast as South Korea’s Prince Lee Shin, for Musical ‘Goong’.

Similar to the original comic story, the musical’s main theme would set in a unique imagination setting as if the Republic of South Korea is still a country with constitutional monarchy system. The story will begin with an arranged marriage between the prince and a tomboy high school teenager due to political reason that makes her enters into a life in palace, from that point the conflict will start to roll.

‘Goong’ producer on the 7th said, “U-Know Yunho is proven already with his singing and dancing skills, he’s also experiencing many stage performances through various concerts and he has an outter appearance just like a crown prince as well as charming eyes that could grasp the audiences, we think that we have chosen the rightest person.” and, “He has a passion to be a musical actor, sincerity, and positive attitude.” revealing the reasons why Yunho was casted.

The producer also stated, “U-Know Yunho’s new figure as a charismatic musical singer that has never been seen before will be revealed through this stage.” giving a high expectations.

‘Goong’ musical produced by Group Eight which produces drama such as Boys Over Flowers is coming out on September 8th and will open at the Seoul National Museum’s theater.

Yong Theater at the National Museum of Korea holds 862 seats. Since there will be 2 other stars who will play Shin in the musical,hopefully, they'll announce which dates Yunho will be playing Shin.

All the cast, INCLUDING YUNHO, had to audition for the musical. He was selected because of his ability to sing, dance, act, and charismatic stage presence along with the looks to best play the role of Shin. The decision was made about a month ago and practice started about 2 weeks ago.

Supposedly the staff who worked on the drama Goong will also work on the musical. Rumors have been floating for a long time but seems like it may be coming to fruition. On June 3rd in the afternoon, member of TVXQ, U-Know Yunho attended and participated in photo exhibition for ‘Cartier LOVE Charity Collections Exhibition’ held by Cartier Maison boutique at Cheongnam-dong, Gangnam.

The Cartier LOVE Charity Exhibition presented a photo exhibition of stars wearing a collection set of Cartier Love Summer Bracelet portraying their natural looks, the 11 top South Korea stars are – Rain (Jung Ji Hoon), Ji Jin-hee, Kim Hyun Joong (SS501), U-Know Yunho (TVXQ), Kim Hee-sun, Son Ye-jin, YoonA (SNSD), Yoon Eun-hye, Ha Ji-won, Kang Ji-hwan, and Lee Min-ho.

Welcoming its 4th anniversary of LOVE DAY, Cartier is planning to spread various love messages around the world, while all proceeds from the event will be donated to the international organization IVI (International Vaccine Institute).

The exhibition will be held for 10 days from June 4 to June 13.
